As part of the Frontier Lecture Series 2, CICS College of Teacher Education, Mathra, organized an enlightening session on Gender, Sex, and Sexuality on 12 February 2025. The session aimed to enhance the understanding of fundamental concepts related to gender, sex, and sexuality, fostering awareness and inclusivity among students. The event commenced with a warm welcome speech by Dr. Shylaja C.V, Principal, CICS College of Teacher Education. In her address, she emphasized the importance of discussing gender-related topics in an academic space. She highlighted the significance of creating awareness about gender identities, sexual orientation, and the social aspects associated with them, especially in the field of education.
The resource person for the session was Dr. A.P.M. Mohammed Rafeeq, Head of the PG
Department of Psychology at PeeKey CICS Arts and Science College and former Principal of EMEA College, Kondotty. He delivered an engaging and thought-provoking session on gender, sex, and sexuality. The key topics covered in the session included:
Understanding Gender and Sex: Dr. Rafeeq explained the distinction between gender and sex. He elaborated on how gender roles are shaped by societal norms, traditions, and cultural beliefs.
Determination of Gender and Sex: The session provided insights into how biological sex is
determined by chromosomes and how gender identity is influenced by psychological and
sociocultural factors.
Concept of Sexuality: The speaker emphasized that sexuality is a broad and diverse aspect of human identity. He discussed how sexuality is influenced by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors.
Gender Identity and Individuality: Dr. Rafeeq addressed the importance of accepting gender identities beyond the binary understanding of male and female. He spoke about transgender identities, non-binary identities, and the challenges faced by individuals in expressing their gender identity.
Social and Psychological Aspects of Gender and Sexuality: The session also covered how social norms, family structures, and educational institutions impact an individual’s perception of gender and sexuality. Dr. Rafeeq encouraged an open-minded and inclusive approach in educational settings. After the session, a vote of thanks was delivered by Fildha, Vice chair person, who expressed gratitude to the guest speaker for his insightful presentation. She also acknowledged the efforts of the organizers and faculty members for arranging such an informative program.
