Date : 7 August 2026
Day : Friday
Venue : Social Science Classroom
Organised by : CICS College of Teacher Education, In association with IQAC
Resource Person: Fida E.K., Librarian
CICS College of Teacher Education, in association with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organised a Library Orientation Programme titled “Pages & Possibilities” on 7 August 2026 at the Social Science Classroom. The programme was conducted with the objective of familiarising students with the college library, its facilities, resources, services, and rules. The session also aimed to encourage students to make effective use of the library for their academic and personal development.
Details of the Programme
The session was led by Ms. Fida E.K., Librarian, who provided students with a detailed introduction to the functioning of the college library. She explained the various facilities and resources available and highlighted the importance of developing regular reading, reference, and information-seeking habits.
The librarian explained the library card system and informed the students that each student would be provided with three library cards for borrowing books. She also explained the entry procedure. Each student has a unique barcode attached to their identity card, which is used for identification and entry into the library.
The students were also introduced to the library website, which serves as an important source of academic information. The website provides access to information and resources related to books, articles, newspapers, and previous-year question papers. Students were encouraged to make use of these resources for assignments, examination preparation, reference work, and academic enrichment.
Library Facilities and Sections
The resource person explained the different reading and resource sections available in the library. These include:
- Reading Corner – provides a suitable space for students to read and study.
- Article Corner – provides access to articles and additional reading materials.
- Previous-Year Textbook Corner – contains textbooks and materials from previous academic years for reference.
- Newspaper Corner – provides access to newspapers and helps students stay informed about current affairs and developments.
- Novel Corner – provides novels and other literary materials to encourage recreational reading and develop reading habits.
These facilities demonstrate that the library serves not only as a place for accessing academic textbooks but also as a broader centre for reading, exploration, and knowledge development.
Rules Regarding Borrowing and Returning of Books
The librarian also explained the rules and responsibilities associated with borrowing library books. Students were informed that a book can be kept for a period of two weeks. If a student requires the book for a longer period, it should be renewed after two weeks, subject to the applicable library rules.
Students were also informed about the importance of returning books on or before the specified due date. A fine of ₹1 per day will be charged for books that are not returned by the last date. The students were therefore advised to keep track of the due dates and renew books in time whenever necessary.
Importance of the Programme
The orientation programme provided students with a clear understanding of the resources and facilities available through the college library. It emphasised the importance of using the library effectively for academic study, assignments, examination preparation, reference work, independent learning, and personal reading.
The programme also encouraged students to explore different types of resources rather than depending solely on textbooks. The availability of newspapers, articles, previous-year question papers, textbooks, and novels provides students with opportunities to broaden their knowledge and develop a consistent reading habit.
Conclusion
The “Pages & Possibilities” Library Orientation Programme was an informative and valuable academic initiative. The session successfully familiarised students with the library card system, barcode-based entry, online library resources, different library sections, and the rules regarding the borrowing, renewal, and timely return of books.
The programme motivated students to make regular and responsible use of the library and its resources. It also highlighted the role of the library as an essential centre for learning, reading, information gathering, academic reference, and overall intellectual development. The orientation was successfully conducted and provided students with useful knowledge that will help them make effective use of the college library throughout their academic journey.
