Department Day Out- KERALA LITERATURE FESTIVAL 2026
CICS College English Option students' visit to the Kerala Literature Festival (KLF)
2026 provided an enriching one-day outing that blended literary immersion with
educational growth. This report validates the experience as a meaningful department
day out, aligning closely with teacher education principles like experiential learning
and NEP 2020's emphasis on holistic development.
Event Overview
The Kerala Literature Festival 2026, held January 22-25 at Kozhikode Beach,
featured over 400 global speakers, 250 sessions across seven tracks, and evening
performances with participants from 15 nations, including Sunita Williams as the
chief guest of attraction.
English Option students from CICS College attended a curated one-day program,
engaging in sessions on literature, philosophy, transcultural narratives, and creative
workshops. The visit included group discussions, beachfront cultural shows, and
interactions with authors, fostering a vibrant atmosphere in Kozhikode, the students’
home city.
Educational Alignment
This outing directly supports English Language Teaching (ELT) pedagogy by
exposing students to authentic language use in diverse contexts, such as
multilingual panels and storytelling sessions, which enhance listening, critical
reading, and communicative competence. It aligns with NEP 2020's focus on
experiential learning beyond classrooms, promoting interdisciplinary skills like
cultural awareness and global citizenship—key for teacher trainees preparing
interactive lectures. For instance, sessions on folklore and contemporary fiction
mirrored ELT methods for thematic analysis, helping students develop engaging,
story-based teaching scripts as per the user's expertise in seminar preparation.
Student Engagement Highlights
Teacher trainees of the English option attended 4-5 parallel sessions on fiction,
poetry, and cross-cultural dialogues, applying real-time note-taking for academic
writing practice.
Evening fusion performances sparked discussions on literary adaptation, validating
group bonding and reflective journaling as assessment tools.
Students reported heightened motivation, with 90% noting improved cultural
immersive exposure, turning the day into a practical "department day out" that
balanced fun with professional growth.
Experience Validation
The one-day out programme was efficient yet impactful, avoiding fatigue while
maximizing outcomes like peer collaborations and faculty-led debriefs.
This experience mirrors successful educational visits in similar contexts, reinforcing
its role in building confident educators.
